Christianity with a closed fist (my writing with excerpts from a sermon by Dr. Ed Young)

Many Christians live their lives standing firmly with fists closed. We should pray that God would show us aspects of our resurrected bodies; opened receiving hands and bended knee's.

Dr. Ed Young, (paraphrase)

Dr. Young shared with pain in his voice of his pious, legalistic, manipulating mother who loved him but was so firm in her Christianity she lived as characterized above, closed fisted.

Being from his generation as I am, one of the greatest challenges as an adult offspring of that great generation was to break that mold and teach our parents to love openly, hug one another to show our feelings. Their lives were, work, church, obedience, and more work. The depression and war taught them never to count on prosperity.

He told of Joni Eareckson Tata, paralyzed from the neck down, as she realized that she could not kneel before Jesus. She looked forward to her resurrected body being able to kneel before her beloved Savior.

I pray that God will kill in me any attitude or behavior that does not easily translate to my heavenly resurrected body. Open my fisted hands, bend my stubborn knees, and let others see in me that glorified transformed body I will enjoy in heaven.

Shazam (for those of you who were listening this morning.)

Mike
