For Harry (written for my good friend Harry Lively)

FOR HARRY,

a light of Jesus, shining in the storm

We sit among the others with the big C on our faces,

The treatment we all wait for is our only hope for life.

Nobody wants to be here, of all the many places,

Each one just sits, and dreams of being somewhere else.

But, then that one steps in and the atmosphere changes.

The silly man sits down and has a smile for all he greets.

He talks among the others and speaks of things of beauty,

It seems he doesn't realize the gravity of this place.

He goes on about his blessings, how God has been so good.

Does he not even care that he must be here like the rest?

Where does he get his glow, this lightness in his manner?

Just look at how he's laughing, saying God is just the best.

I wish I had some hope that God is hearing when I'm praying,

I've asked so many times for Him to rid me of this thing.

I'm envious of this one, who spreads this light and laughter,

It's obvious that God has given to him something I don't have.

I turn and ask his secret, "what makes you stay so happy?

Don't you know that God has left us on our own?

You should have sense to know that this is not a blessing,

While others live with health, this has become our home."

"It's no secret," he replies, "I've faith that He is leading

Even in this time of trouble, He has never lost control

Surrounded by His angels and the prayers that have been offered,

I have no fear; my hope is firmly resting in His word."

"So, you're not mad about this evil eating at your body,

Don't you ever want to scream out that it is so unfair?

I've prayed so long that He will take this thing,

Why does He not hear my plea, and leave me whole again"

"Let not your heart be troubled, is the word that he has left us,

He did not say that trouble would not be there all along

The practice of His presence, peace, and comfort of His Spirit

Are here but for the asking if we give in to His will

He's promised all these things are working for our good.

This life is full of trouble, but His word is always true.

Cancers' just a storm, tossing my body on the ocean

In His word, I'm still walking under peaceful skies of blue."
